What Does PCEA Stand For? Meaning, History and What We Believe

Quick Answer

PCEA stands for the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. “Presbyterian” comes from the Greek word presbyteros, meaning elder, because the church is governed by elders rather than bishops. The PCEA grew out of the Church of Scotland Mission that began at Kikuyu in 1898, holds the Westminster Confession as its standard, affirms the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, and worships in congregations across Kenya and beyond.

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

— Matthew 18:20

If you have ever seen “PCEA” on a church signboard, a school gate or a hospital and wondered what exactly it means, you are in good company. It is one of the most searched questions about the church, so here is a plain answer, followed by the story and the beliefs behind the letters.

What the Letters Mean

P-C-E-A stands for Presbyterian Church of East Africa. Each word tells you something:

  • Presbyterian: the church is governed by presbyters, the Greek word for elders. Elders are chosen from the congregation and serve together, so no single person rules the church.
  • Church: a community of believers, not just a building.
  • East Africa: the region where the denomination took root and still has its home. Its congregations are found across Kenya, with a presence in neighbouring countries and among Kenyans abroad.

Where the PCEA Came From

The PCEA’s story begins with the Church of Scotland Mission. The first missionary pioneers reached Kikuyu from Kibwezi in September 1898, and over the following years churches, schools and clinics grew around their work.

The distinctly Presbyterian shape of the church came in September 1920, when the first local Kirk Session was constituted and 43 African men were ordained as elders. We tell that week in full in 100 Years of African Eldership.

Today the PCEA is a Kenyan-led denomination. Our own Presbytery, PCEA Milimani South, has eight parishes and thirty-four congregations in and around Nairobi, with roots that go back as far as the 1902 Ruthimitu mission at Dagoretti.

What the PCEA Believes

The PCEA belongs to the Reformed family of churches. In brief:

  • One God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We explain why this matters in Why Presbyterians Talk About the Trinity.
  • The Bible is the final authority (sola scriptura), and salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone, not by our own effort.
  • Creeds and confession: the church affirms the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed, and holds the Westminster Confession of Faith as its confessional standard.
  • Two sacraments: Baptism, including the baptism of infants of believing parents, and Holy Communion. See Infant Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

How the PCEA Is Governed

Presbyterian government works in layers of elder-led courts. Each congregation is led by a Kirk Session of elders together with its minister. Congregations are grouped into a Presbytery (ours is Milimani South), and Presbyteries together make up the General Assembly. There are no bishops and no single head over the whole church; decisions are made together. For more on the office itself, read What Is a Presbyterian Church? More Than Sunday Services

The letters PCEA also appear on schools, nurseries and community programmes. In our Presbytery that includes church schools, a women’s guild, men’s and youth fellowships, a SACCO, medical camps and outreach to widows, orphans and the elderly. Read how it looks on the ground in Faith in Action.

Visiting for the First Time

Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member, dress a particular way or know the order of service in advance. Here is what to expect on a Sunday.
