8 Parishes, 34 Congregations: Inside the Growth of PCEA Milimani South Presbytery

8 Parishes, 34 Congregations: Inside the Growth of PCEA Milimani South Presbytery

Quick Answer

PCEA Milimani South Presbytery has grown from 7 parishes at its founding in December 2013 to 8 parishes and 34 congregations today, following the 2022 subdivision of Karen Parish. Its eldership has grown from 136 to 168 active elders over the same period, anchored by a vision drawn from Matthew 5:16 — to mirror Jesus Christ in totality.

Twelve years ago, PCEA Milimani South Presbytery did not exist as its own body. It was hived off from the larger Milimani Presbytery on 8th December 2013 and began its own operations in January 2014 with seven parishes and one outreach area. Today it is a Presbytery of 8 parishes, 34 congregations, and 168 active elders, spread across the peri-urban landscapes of Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties. Here is the story of how it got here — and what its growth looks like today.

How the Presbytery Began

PCEA Milimani South Presbytery was hived from the larger Milimani Presbytery on 8th December 2013 and started its own operations on 6th January 2014. It is one of nine presbyteries that make up the wider Nairobi Region of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. The Presbytery sits in a peri-urban setting, covering parts of Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties, with its physical offices located at PCEA Riruta Satellite Church.

Since its inception, the Presbytery has experienced what its own leadership describes as steady “numerical and spiritual growth” — a claim borne out by the parish, congregation, and eldership figures below.

From Seven Parishes to Eight

At inception, the Presbytery comprised seven parishes plus one integrated outreach area:

Parish / Area (at inception, 2013–2014)
PCEA Nairobi West Parish
PCEA Lang’ata Parish
PCEA Karen Parish
PCEA Waithaka Parish
PCEA Riruta Parish
PCEA Mutu-ini Parish
PCEA Dagoretti Parish
PCEA Namanga Nendeni Area (integrated outreach area)

In November 2022, Karen Parish was subdivided into two — Karen West Parish and Karen Central Parish — bringing the Presbytery to its current count of 8 parishes, still alongside the Namanga Nendeni Area. Each of the 8 parishes today is served by its own Parish Secretary/Administrator, Evangelist, Youth Coordinator, and Children’s Ministry Coordinator.

34 Congregations and Growing

Across its 8 parishes and the Namanga Nendeni Area, the Presbytery now counts 34 congregations in total — with the Namanga Nendeni Area alone responsible for 17 of them, reflecting its wide rural outreach footprint stretching toward the Kenya–Tanzania border region.

Growth has also shown up in new church dedications. Six congregations have been formally dedicated as churches in the last decade:

Church Parish / Area Dedication Date
PCEA Ruthimitu Church Dagoretti Parish 24 September 2023
PCEA Lifespring Church Karen Central Parish 28 August 2022
PCEA Namunyak Church Namanga Nendeni Area 27 September 2020
PCEA Ewang’an Church Namanga Nendeni Area 25 August 2019
PCEA Manyatta Church Mutu-ini Parish 29 April 2018
PCEA Karinde Church Mutu-ini Parish 24 June 2018

A Growing Eldership

The Presbyterian model of church government is built around the office of the elder, and the numbers reflect a Presbytery that has steadily raised up leaders alongside its congregations. At inception, the Presbytery had 136 active elders and 48 retired elders. Today, it counts 168 active elders and 74 retired elders — growth in both serving leadership and the generation that has stepped back after years of service.

Vision and Mission

Every parish, congregation, and ministry under the Presbytery is anchored to two short statements:

Vision: “A Presbytery that Mirrors Jesus Christ In Totality” (Matthew 5:16)

Mission: “To Worship God and Care for Humanity in Obedience to the Great Commission” (Matthew 28:19)

Both verses recur throughout the Presbytery’s life — from how individual parishes describe their own purpose to how the Presbytery frames its growth.
